Thenkachi Ko. Swaminathan, a renowned orator, television personality, and author of various Tamil books, was widely known for his contributions in the field of agriculture. Born in Thenkachi, a small village in Perambalur district, Tamil Nadu, he pursued a degree in agriculture from the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University in Coimbatore. Initially working as an Agricultural Extension Officer, he later left his job to focus on farming in his agricultural lands. In 1977, he joined All India Radio and began delivering speeches on agricultural topics.

Swaminathan’s oration gained immense popularity, particularly through his program called “Pannai Illam” (Farm House), which became an instant hit with farmers. Using his scientific knowledge, he effectively taught farmers about modern agricultural techniques while maintaining an approachable and relatable style. From 1988 until his retirement in 2002, his daily program “Indru Oru Thagaval” (Message for the Day) was aired without interruption, captivating millions of people across Tamil Nadu. Presented in simple colloquial Tamil and adorned with anecdotes that made listeners smile and reflect, the program became a part of people’s morning routine. His insightful talks from “Indru Oru Thagaval” were later compiled into 23 volumes of books and published by Chennai Kalaivaani Puthakalayam, with the entire remuneration donated to charities.

As television gained popularity, Swaminathan also presented a similar program called “Indha Naal Iniya Naal” (This Day, a Sweet Day) on Sun TV. Through this program, he continued to deliver thought-provoking messages, encouraging self-reflection and personal growth.

Swaminathan’s talents extended beyond broadcasting. He wrote scripts, plays, poetry, children’s programs, and short stories. His significant contributions earned him recognition and admiration in the field of communication.
